Depression, Dejection in a Relationship: How to care for a Recovering Spouse

Dejection also known as depression in clinical term is a complex condition that has lived with the society since the inception of life. It’s not easy to accurately define what depression really is. The traits that accompany it may include fatigue, lack of interest in common activities, withdrawal from others and a display of general sadness or hopelessness. There seems to be two major causes of depression. The first one is the genetically linked condition and the other one being the psychological condition caused by the feeble endurance to mental strain

Living with a depressed spouse can be a challenging experience especially if he or she shows high signs of social disconnection. However depression is a treatable condition and it’s important to give hope to the patient as he or she undergoes the stages of recovery. One of the best ways to help your ailing partner is by empowering them to feel socially accepted. He or she needs to trust you with security and confidentiality to share out his or her feelings. Don’t withdraw when your ailing spouse begins to show the signs of doing the same. A depressed person may lose his or her sex drive. Be innovative in manual therapeutic means to help him or her enjoy intimacy without taking the offense against lack of the automatic sex drive.

Try to help your depressed spouse identify the root cause of his or her condition. Depending on the causes and the stage of the condition it is easy to know what type of psychological, medical or a therapy to be sought. Some conditions of depression may be due to a persistent disease or a sickness weighing down your spouse for a period of time. By identifying the cause of depression as a particular disease, for example, and seeking for its treatment may be a good move towards curing his or her depression.

Help your partner to build hope and patience since some types of depression may take time before full recovery, depending on the period of time they have been suffering or the level of the type of depression they are suffering from. Showing love and tolerance to your partner at such times is a good home therapy as he or she undergoes any other form of treatment. It’s also important to show compassion and offer to do to him or her the things that would elevate their moods. Make sure they feed well. Depression may badly affect one’s health especially if he or she is not feeding well. Get the person some energy boosting and mood elevating supplements to make sure he or she does not dampen the mood.
